Update 6: Trans-Europe 2015 – 4 Weeks Away

Germany - Austria - Slovakia

We picked up where we left off from last week at Regensburg, Germany and make our way through Austria. The highlight of this leg of the trip takes us through the cities of Linz and Vienna and find ourselves in Bratislava, Slovakia. We cover about +290 more miles of our trip as we make our way into the Eastern Europe region. From what I’ve been reading, many of the areas features pleasant riding experience along the Danube River. Here is the day-by-day itinerary.

Regensburg, Germany to Bratislava, Slovakia

  • April 29, 2015 – Regensburg to Deggendorf
  • April 30, 2015 – Deggendorf to Hutt-Siedlung, Austria
  • May 1, 2015 –  Hutt-Siedlung to Ottensheim
  • May 2, 2015 – REST DAY at Ottensheim / Linz
  • May 3, 2015 – Ottensheim to Grein
  • May 4, 2015 – Grein to Krems an der Donau
  • May 5, 2015 – Krems an der Donau to Klosterneuberg
  • May 6, 2015 – Klosterneuberg to Bratislava, Slovakia

Most of our stops will require camping for this stretch of the trip with the exception of Bratislava, Slovakia where we will be staying at a hostel. Another annoying thing is that Google Maps bicycle routes does not work in Slovakia. Therefore I had to use walking directions to construct the image above for illustration. That means I’ll need to use other services like Open Runner or Ride With GPS once again. Worse case scenario, I’ll map by walking directions. Hopefully by the time we make it into Austria, we should have purchased paper maps that should help us navigate through Romania.

Operational Stuff

Charles Schwab account has now been funded. We can now make withdrawals from the account without incurring any foreign transaction fee. This will come in handy when we are traveling between country to avoid the problem of exchanging our currency. The account doesn’t have fees for low balance or other monthly fees which is an added bonus.

I still haven’t finished putting my bike back together yet so no further updates on that. I have cable stops ordered for my brake cables but they’re stuck in Texas right now. Hopefully I can get that next week so I can finally put the pieces back and go on some test rides with my S&S coupled bike. Only thing complete is installation of cable splitters for the 2 shifter cables. I was actually hoping to get the bike ready for this weekend’s overnight trip but it wasn’t meant to be.

I’m toying with the idea of possibly changing out the bar tape as that’s been thoroughly worn down. I’m thinking either a Brooks brand or the Handlebra. Both options are expensive but well-worth it in durability and style. That’s about it for now. I hope to wrap up the rest of the itinerary next week or even before so we can start figuring out accommodations for each day.

Here are the previous week’s update for your reference.
