Day 13: Warm Waters (Day Off)

Day 13: Warm Waters (Day Off)

Bay Center

It seems that each off day offers something different than the previous ones so far.  This is only our second day off, but what we did for fun was entirely different than what we did the last time in Victoria, BC.  This time we had company for half of the day and spent more time staying still.  Continue reading to see what I mean.

Beach Exploring

Victoria loves her slugs

Victoria loves her slugs

The girls did their laundry in the morning while we all prepared our breakfast.  We all decided that we needed to check out the beach the KOA had access to, so we toured around the KOA until we found the trail opening.  It was a narrow path with loose rocks strewn throughout the trail in the forest.  We eventually found the stair case that led us onto the soft sand of the beach.  Evadne quickly took her shoes off to test the water and was pleasantly surprised that the water was actually warm.  Everyone soon followed and discovered the luke warm water of the bay.  It was strange to have our feet comfortably submerged in warm salt water, while we continued walking out further into the water.

Girls on water

As some of you may know, I can’t swim so my tendency was to stay close to land as much as possible.  The girls wanted to dig for oysters in the sand, but only succeeded in pulling out random clams and sea-snails (we later found out that the bay was great for clam digging and the oystering process does not include waning through the sand).  We were interrupted by the Tsunami warning system, so we retreated back to the beach and made our way back up to the KOA camp grounds.

Bye Again

Deep thoughts ... About food?

Deep thoughts … About food?

Once again, we bid farewell to the girls as they moved on to Cape Disappointment, which was about 30 miles south.  I retreated back to the entertainment / play area of the KOA to baby sit our charging devices and to publish more content for our newsletter last week.  At the same time, Sang Hyun took an afternoon nap in his tent.  It was about 5:30PM when I finished my work.  I returned to our camp to get ready for dinner at the only restaurant that was open in Bay Center, Dock by the Sea.

Only Restaurant in Town

We rode our unloaded bikes over to the restaurant.  The place definitely felt like a local hang out as the waitress / bartender / cook greeted everyone by their first name except the tourists.  We were 2 of 6 tourists there.  We ordered the Captain’s feast, which was pretty much everything fried: oysters, clams, fish, french fries, and garlic.  I had a side salad which really didn’t help with the overwhelmingly oily dinner.

We rode our bikes back to the KOA after dinner, feeling full and disgusted with the overconsumption of oily food.  We went to the KOA office and bought some more things for the night, like firewood, as well as items to bring with us for the next day.  We are ready to go for the next week of our adventure.  First stop will be in Fort Stevens in Oregon and then ending somewhere near Dunes City.
