The Story of How Long Beach City Hall Got Itself a Bicycle – A really good read about how a pennyfarthing is installed on Long Beach City Hall as a result of an art project. This story involves artist Patrick Vogel whose pieces are found throughout the City of Long Beach and local legend Mark Bixby.

Bicycle wayfinding signage is coming to Los Angeles neighborhoods! – If you’ve ever ridden outside of Los Angeles, you probably noticed that signage designating certain places are incredibly helpful.  LA is finally getting our way-finding signs for bike paths, bike lanes, etc.  This will be a positive change to help people who visit Los Angeles and even for those who live here know where to go for landmarks and public services.  It’s great to see things like this implemented in my hometown.

Popular pre-L.A. Marathon bike ride canceled after city permit snag – This was the biggest story of the week where the Bureau of Street Services attempted to shut down the ever popular Wolfpack Marathon Crash Race for not having their permit for the event 5 days before the event was set to start.  This event attracts thousands of cyclists from all over town as well as some people from other countries to ride the LA Marathon course hours before the run started.  This event has played a pivotal role in the last 5 years in bringing the bike culture in LA.  Fortunately, the ride was saved by Mayor Eric Garcetti with the support of Los Angeles Police Department was reinstated to a “fun ride” the day before.  This was probably one of the best things the Mayor has done for us cyclists and folks should thank him for this act of kindness as this would have been a huge disappointment to many people who had paid to attend the event.

By The Time Your Car Goes Driverless, You Won’t Know The Difference – I’ve always think that autonomous cars are just around the corner and this article backs up my theory.  We had reported a few weeks ago that Ford’s CEO had indicated something to this effect where the car culture could not continue at this pace and something needs to change.  There are already technology out there that is doing some of the driving for you and by time you realize it, it wouldn’t matter.  So why is this so important to bicycling?  This basically should improve the safety factor on the road for both motorists and pedestrians.  In addition to that, the car is now treated as a commodity and not like a status symbol where one group of people are perceived to have more rights to road than others.  This should be the equalizer of transportation we hope.

Folding Electric Bike – With the popularity of folding bikes and e-bikes these days, this makes a lot of sense for commuters who need that additional help to get through their commute.  A London company, Jam Vehicles Ltd., creates a folding electric bike called the Jive Bike.  This things folds up to a compact form when not in use while providing electric power.  This looks promising but I still have reservations on how heavy this will be and if this is a viable solution.  What attracts me to folding bikes is the ability to fold to something that is manageable on short rides around the city or to be stored in a car trunk and pulled out for a ride.

Cyclist travels on M25 motorway in rush hour after phone app sends him wrong way – This happens probably more frequent than not where a person follows their GPS into a local highway.  This time it happened in London on the M25 motorway.  There are sections in California coast that you are allowed to ride on the freeway because there isn’t any other alternative roads around between Ventura and Carpinteria or between Goleta and Buellton.
