Who are the Milestone Riders?

Milestone Rides consists of Johnny Lam and Sang Hyun de Krieger.  We are avid bicycle touring / camping enthusiasts who try to fit in as many bicycle adventures as we possibly could in this lifetime.  We are both residents in Southern California and have taken a few bicycle vacations together.  These trips include overnight self-supported rides to Lake Perris from Chino Hills, Joshua Tree National Park from Chino Hills, and a fully supported ride from San Francisco to Santa Monica.  We continued from Santa Monica and made it all the way down to the US and Mexican Border. After cycling the Southern California coast, we both decided that we had to do something big.  Since we are both turning 40 in a few years, why not plan the mother of all trips (for now) to ride from coast to coast starting at San Diego, CA to St. Augustine, FL.  This is how the idea of Milestone Rides was born!  We want to document our big adventure and all the ones leading up to it and this blog would be the perfect way to track the before, during, and after of it all.  This would be the “one stop shop” where our family, friends, and fellow bicycle tourist can find out more about us and our stories.

Why Milestone Rides?

Milestone Rides is the perfect name for this blog because our stories can still continue to live on even after we are long and gone (we hope).  We didn’t want to have a generic “ride across America” type of name because that thinking is too narrow.  Instead, why not continue to write even after our epic journey across the country?  Afterall, we may have smaller milestone rides that will need to be documented as well.  That is why Milestone Rides is the perfect title to our blog.

How will you document your rides?

We will obviously be blogging every step of the way.  At the same time, we will be promoting other like-minded individuals through our social network avenues, so be sure to Like Us on Facebook or follow our Twitter handle.  The blog will contain content that is solely related to our current milestone ride.  Posts will include original photography and video produced by us.  Look for our media content on YouTube!, Flickr, or Vimeo.

How do you choose your milestone ride?

That’s easy.  If one of us wants to go, we go.  We will not do the same ride twice unless the other person has not ridden the ride before.  This will allow us to continue to explore this great planet of ours.  We will predominantly choose riding destinations in the United States at first, but we anticipate going overseas soon, as places like Holland and Australia are begging to be explored by bike.

Will you be bringing awareness to a particular nonprofit or charity?

Yes we are!  Each ride will be benefiting a soon-to-be-determined heart related non-profit.  In 2012, Johnny lost his father and Sang Hyun lost a father-in-law from a heart disease.  We would like to dedicate our rides to help raise awareness, as well as raise money to support those who are helping to fight the #1 cause of death in America.

What will you be riding?

Sang Hyun will be riding his trusty black Surly Long Haul Trucker.  Johnny will be pedaling on his Salsa Vaya 3.  These are the touring bikes we’ve settled on after trying hybrid bikes and long tail bikes with Xtracycle attachments.  We may post some nostalgic ride pictures or ride videos from previous trips.  Connect with us with your social network preference, follow us using your favorite RSS reader, or subscribe to our newsletter.

Why do you have advertisements on your site?

Hosting a blog and planning some of these adventures to provide content our readers want to read and see will cost us money.  Instead of asking donations from our readers for our day-to-day operations, we ask that you donate to our cause and click on some links so that we are paid by other means.  We may even do gear reviews that may help you decide if you should buy the next touring doohickey.  You see, it’ll be mutually beneficial for both of us.

Final remarks

I hope you stick around and connect with us one way or another.  We promise that we will provide the most up-to-date content for your viewing pleasure.  Let our adventures be the jumping off point to start your own milestone ride!

Sang Hyun and Johnny an awesome job! Count me in as one of your fans. Maybe you should make some T-shirts with your logo that people can purchase so you will raise more awareness to your cause. Let me know if I can help with that (if you agree of course).

Thank you for becoming our fans! 🙂 That’s a great idea. Merchandising opportunities are definitely something we can consider for raising money. I’ll talk with Sang Hyun and see what his thoughts are and we’ll get back to you.
